Austria's Efforts to Protect Journalists

In September Maria Elizabeth Macías Castro was found decapitated on a road outside the city of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. A note placed on her body stated that she was killed because of her reporting on social media platforms. Luis Emanuel Ruiz Carrillo was discovered fatally wounded on the streets of Monterrey after his abduction the night before with José Luis Cerda Meléndez, an entertainment show host.

In Another LIfetime

On March 5, 2012 the Austrian Embassy, in cooperation with the Jewish Film Festival in Washington, D.C., invited interested guests to their screening of the Austrian drama In Another Lifetime (Vielleicht In Einem Anderen Leben). The movie had its D.C. premier on December 6, 2011 as part of the Jewish Community Center’s Film Festival.

An Interview With Ursula Strauss

Since her early childhood Ursula Strauss, who grew up in a small village in Lower Austria, dreamed of becoming an actress. Now, some years later she has turned this dream into reality. Strauss is now one of the most asked-for and successful actresses in Austria. Her movie Revanche was nominated for Best Foreign Picture at the Academy Awards in 2008 and most recently Ursula was given the Austrian Movie Award for her touching performance in the drama In Another Lifetime.

Radioactive Wolves

Daniel started working for the Embassy in 1971 when it still occupied its old building on Embassy row and Daniel was in his 20s. After a change of location, five Austrian Presidents,10 Ambassadors and 42 years, although still enjoying his work, he now feels it is time for him to retire.

Our beloved Ulf Pacher, former colleague and editor of Austrian Information from 1969-2000, passed away on February 5, 2012 in Kitzbühel after years of illness. All who knew him remember him with a smile, and he is sorely missed by his wife Monika, son-in-law Charles, daughter Daniela, and granddaughter Belinda.
